Lata Mangeshkar Songs With Less Famous Composers Part 2
In a previous post I had talked about some songs Lata Mangeshkar has sung for relatively less famous music director. In continuation of that post, I present to you a few more music directors.
Sardar Malik – Anu Malik's father did not meet with much success. In one of his early films, Thokar, he had some nice compositions, but if at all he's known today it's because of his compositions in Saranga. Ironically, he did not get much work after Saranga and virtually disappeared into obscurity. One of his songs for Lata Mangeshkar in the 1954 film Chor Bazar makes one wonder why someone who could create such an evocative melody did not get enough work.
Huyi Ye Humse Nadani (Chor Bazar, 1954, Shakeel Badayuni)
Datta Naik– N. Datta worked as Sachin Dev Burman's assistant before he turned into an independent composer in 1955. His very first film as a music director – Milap – had a lovely Lata melody – Ye Baharon Ka Sama. He did limited work with Lata Mangeshkar, but their collaboration almost always resulted in great compositions. Just as an example, listen to this song from Black Cat.
Sitare Rah Takte Hain (Black Cat, 1959, Jaan Nisar Akhtar)
Sudhir Phadke – Strictly speaking, Sudhir Phadke cannot be categorized as a "less famous" composer, as he was quite a name in the Marathi music industry. However, his output in Hindi films was limited. Most of his compositions for Lata were based on classical music, the most famous being Jyoti Kalash Chhalke from Bhabhi Ki Choodiyan. Here are two of my favourite Sudhir Phadke creations for Lata:
Lau Lagati Geet Gaati (Bhabhi Ki Choodiyan, 1961, Pt. Narendra Sharma)
Baandh Preet Phool Dor (Malti Madhav, 1951, Pt. Narendra Sharma)
Iqbal Qureishi – I have to admit that I don't know much about Iqbal Qureishi, except for some of his compositions. Lata Mangeshkar sang around 8 songs under his baton. The first time I heard Itna Na Sata from Bindiya (1960), I absolutely fell in love with the song.
Itna Na Sata (Bindiya, 1960, Rajendra Krishan)
Another interesting Iqbal Qureishi composition is a Lata-Rafi duet from Banarasi Thug – Aaj Mausam Ki Masti Mein, which was reproduced by him note for note a few years later in a Rafi-Asha duet from the film Cha Cha Cha – Ek Chameli Ke Mandwe Tale.

Hey Aditya,
Good to see more articles on Lata :)
I was surprised to see Chitragupta in your list of less famous composers. His body of work is quite large and he was a known name. His tuning with Lata was quite special. I hear in Lata's voice, in his compositions, what she reserved for the likes of C. Ramchandra. There are several Lata/Chitrgupta songs that I love - including the ones you have chosen. Right now, the song that comes to mind right away is the Malkauns beauty "balama maane na" from Opera House.
S N Tripathi was another great composer. His songs for Lata from Rajrani Meera and Kavi Kalidas are wonderful. There is a stunning romantic song from the film Pakshraaj that goes "taaron bhari raat hai". What a beauty!
Ahh....Bulo C. Rani - now he was surely not famous but a fantastic composer. All four Lata songs in Madhur Milan are really something. There are many that I dont remember now, but my admiration for this composer just keeps going higher every time i hear something that I had not heard before from him. There are two Lata songs in an un-released film called Rasiya - "phir chhedne aayi hai" and "woh humse chhup hai" - that will find their place in any best of Lata lists, specially the former.
Jamal Sen's song from Shokhiyaan is a masterpiece. His other Lata song that I really like is "palkan ki palki" from Patit Pawan.
N. Dutta ad Sudhir Phadke were quite prolific - so I am not sure they belong here.
There are several other composers who probably were less known. Amongst them: Sailesh Mukherjee, Snehal Bhatkar (questionable), Mohammad Shafi, Vinod, Bhola Shresta, Chic Chocolate, Pt. Gobindram, Aziz Khan, Hafiz Khan, S. Mohinder, V. Balsara etc who have gorgeous songs with Lata. I am sure I am forgetting many, but there are the ones I remember from the top of my head.
Thanks for this nice tribute to the great lady.
Cheers,
Anil

Hi Anil, I used the term "less famous" quite broadly. When we talk of the biggies, these names tend to get ignored. For example, Chitragupta. He is among the top 5 composers in terms of number of films and has an impressive body of work, but hardly anyone talks about him. These days I'm on a Chitragupta/Lata song collecting spree (have only 95 of the 240 songs she sang for him).
All the other names you mentioned will be included in the next installment(s) of this article. I'm searching for online clippings of their songs.

Lataji is the greatest ever female singer in India. No one can beat her.May be Geeta Dutt or Asha can come closer to her but not able to beat her.Anyway gr8 uncommon sharing.Thanks.

Anil - I hesitate to use terms like "greatest ever" for any artiste, even someone like Lataji whom I adore and worship. She is probably closer to perfection than many other singers, but other singers also have their own strengths and talent.

I guess there is another Anil lurking around here. I guess I will have to sign my full name henceforth :)
Aditya - Let me know if there is any Lata/Chitragupta songs that you are looking for and can't fine - if I have them I will mail them to you.
Cheers,
Anil Hingorani

N. Dutta gave music for 55 films. He gave music for most B. R. Films and you say that he was lesser known?
Posted by: Girish | 07 June 2009
Girish, I called N. Dutta as 'less famous' by the same logic with which you put Anil Biswas in the same list in one of your comments. Anil Biswas composed music for 86 films, and 123 songs by Lata.
